Alas! Yet another rejection letter from a foundation to which I've sent a letter of inquiry in the hopes of applying for a grant. I've sent dozens of letter so far, and none have produced results. My initial reaction upon receiving a letter is to make my letter of inquiry better, make my argument for the project more succinct and persuasive.
However, I'm finding that the reasons these organizations aren't willing to accept a full proposal have very little to do with the project, and everything to do with the economy and the specificity of what they are able to fund. If the organization funds educational projects, those projects must be limited to the US. If the organization funds projects in the developing world, they must be organized by individuals from the country to be served. Foundations that support education are unlikely to support films, and often explicitly state so on their websites. Many letters have made reference to the "state of the economy" and expressed regret that they are unable to support as many endeavors as they would like. Though donations to The Box Exchange are tax exempt through our fiscal sponsorship with Cultural Media Services, many foundations only give to well established charities, which we are not.
The process is frustrating, but part and parcel of taking on a project of this nature during a recession. Any assistance in locating grants and charitable organizations would be greatly appreciated. The financial assistance we have received thus far from friends and family will have a huge impact on the project's success. With it we are able to buy the artistic supplies and cameras necessary for the children to participate in the project, but in order to do the most good with our project* we must locate additional funding. I am hopeful that the Pepsi Refresh Everything grant proposal will be approved and open for voting in April, and am keeping my fingers crossed that, through the various networks our team is a part of, we will be able to get the votes we need to win.
* Produce a documentary that encourages teachers to incorporate project-based learning into their curriculum and inspires individuals to support educational opportunities in the developing world, and produce a mini-promo video on the adjustable glasses described below.
