Week 3 - Photovoice

Spread out in front of me are the hundred or so photos taken by the 3rd graders in Mrs. Harris's class. I'm am speechless. The photos are spectacular! The intimate glimpse these photos provide into the lives of these student will mean so much to the students in Nepal. There are images of children on bikes, showing off Lego towers, hugging new kittens, rough housing with siblings, and doing head stands. The students even had the insight to photograph mundane features of their lives that they thought might surprise the students in Nepal, such as washing machines, microwaves, tree houses, showers, and the average school day outfit. Next week the students will work together with an international student from Nepal attending the University of Cincinnati to create captions for their photos before placing them in the box*.

As the Ohio phase of the project winds to a close, our attention has shifted slightly to plans for how to implement this project at the Pragya English School. One of our main goals right now is to decide on the best way possible for the kids in Nepal to photograph their lives. Because disposable cameras (and the means to develop them) may not be readily available in Nepal we're planning to bring with us several digital cameras. If we find that developing the pictures in Nepal is not possible for whatever reason, this will allow us to bring the photos back digitally and not on film which could be damaged by the powerful x-rays at airports.

If anyone has a used digital camera they would be willing to donate to this cause please be in touch! Your camera would be used by the students at Pragya to document their lives and then donated to the school.

* This aspect of the project was inspired by a well known research and educational method known as Photovoice. For additional information about Photovoice please visit www.photovoice.org, or the Photovoice wikipedia page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photovoice
